Rumors of a secret engagement have been trailing actress Rooney Mara and actor Joaquin Phoenix since May, when Mara stepped out to run errands in Los Angeles with a diamond ring on her left hand. Now, Us Weekly has confirmed that all of the speculation is actually true: The Hollywood couple is set to tie the knot.
Mara is the younger sister of actress Kate Mara, who recently shared that she and her husband Jamie Bell are expecting their first child. There’s no word yet on when Rooney and Phoenix plan to marry or how the proposal went down. However, they had been getting more serious since they started dating in 2016. They had first worked opposite one another while shooting the Spike Jonze film Her and they appear to have started their romance after playing Jesus and Mary Magdalene in last year’s biblical drama Mary Magdalene.
Despite going public with the relationship by walking the red carpet together at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, Rooney and Phoenix have largely remained private about the details of their partnership. Still, in a 2017 interview with T Magazine, the usually reticent actor did share that he and Mara had moved in together in the Hollywood Hills, where he described their relatively quiet life together. Phoenix said that he was usually in bed by 9 p.m. and split his time meditating, hanging out with his dog, and answering emails. He also let it slip that he and Mara have a thing for watching Netflix documentaries together (he noted that they’d just watched the 10-hour true crime series The Staircase at Rooney’s recommendation.)
Us Weekly had previously reported that, according to an anonymous source, the couple was “so in love” but believed that “marriage is too mainstream.” It could be that the actors are planning a non-traditional wedding or a different kind of commitment ceremony, but they’re likely to keep things to themselves for a while.
